Most psychologists believe that a child’s identity is formed by age 3, so we encourage parents to bring their children of all ages. It’s important for very young children to socialize with children and families that look like them. But the most important aspect for families with very young children is for the parents to get the training we provide. You will gain tools to help your children as they develop their identity and make you aware of issues they will encounter.
Yes, for the same reasons above. You will be more prepared to parent your child when he/she arrives.
Yes, definitely. Your family is a mixed race family and it is important for all members to embrace the black culture. We’ve had several families where the white/Asian/Latino siblings have attended and look forward to the weekend as much as the black child in the family.
During the Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon activities the children are divided into groups by their age. They participate in age appropriate, culturally relevant activities supervised by two or more students from the School of Education at St. Norbert College. The college students are supervised by Umoja Co-Founder Dr. Bola Delano-Oriaran. All meals, Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday are large group activities and you are responsible for your children.
We encourage families to spend the whole weekend at the event, so children and adults can socialize and get to know each other. Interaction with other families is an important part of the weekend experience. But yes, if you wish to come only on Saturday, or only Friday night and Saturday you can do so, however the cost for the conference is the same.
No, it doesn’t. And the rooms don’t have televisions. We like it this way. It provides the opportunity for people to interact with each other instead of isolating themselves.
The fee covers all the programming and all the meals.
When you register there is a place to indicate any allergies. We give that list to Green Lake and they will prepare an appropriate meal for you.
Registrations can be cancelled up until 15 days before the event. There is no refund on housing or registration later than that.
